Dams of all scales have been the traditional answer to water resources problems. Now dam removal is a growing trend for a variety of reasons, including safety and environmental impacts. San Clemente Dam was recently removed from the Carmel River. It was the largest dam removal in California history; it is providing a full-scale, real-world laboratory for observing the intended and unintended consequences of large dam removal.
