Outreach & Mentoring

Main content start

Hopkins Marine Station hosts a variety of efforts designed to explain marine biology to the public, and to encourage young students to explore science. Check out the possibilities!

Other Outreach

Stanford Middle/High School Science Circle
The Stanford Science Circle, an academic enrichment program from Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, offers quarter-long classes for local middle and high school students who are interested in exploring the vast and exciting world of scientific research. The Science Circle promotes science interest and career awareness through engaging lectures and hands on activities. Students learn directly from faculty, researchers, and post-doctoral scholars in the Stanford science community.

National Ocean Sciences Bowl (Sea Lion Bowl)
The NOSB is an academic competition and program that addresses a national gap in environmental and earth sciences in public education by introducing high school students to and engaging them in ocean science, preparing them for ocean science-related and other STEM careers, and helping them become knowledgeable  citizens and environmental stewards. The regional bowl is the Sea Lion Bowl usually held at CSUMB.

Monterey Co Science Fair
Contact: Carol Reeb (Block Lab).
Each year, Carol and volunteers (usually 2 people) select a student in the science fair for the “Water for Our Future” award. This award recognizes innovative projects that seek to solve a water shortage at home, at work (or school), or on the farm.

Young Women in Science
A one day field trip to Hopkins as part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Teen Program. The day is full of different stations that the girls rotate through.

Hopkins Service Awards

In continuing our efforts to foster a community of service, inclusion and intellectual rigor, we are excited to announce HMS Service Awards for all sectors of the Hopkins community. Four service awards will be given out beginning in 2022, one to each of the following populations: faculty, staff, graduate students and post-docs. Selection for these awards will occur in the fall, and will be announced at a gala reception open to the HMS community and affiliates.
