Introduction To Science Diving

This course is for Certification in Open Water, Advanced Open Water and DAN First Aid, CPR, AED and O2 

 

Interested in the upcoming Introduction to Scientific Diving Class? Please review the requirements below before completing this application form: 

Prerequisites

1) Must be Stanford affiliated (Students, Staff, Faculty, PostDocs) 

2) Must pass an AAUS Swim Test -  You get 1 attempt to pass the swim test that day. If you do not pass you can try again on the next swim test - but you will not be allowed re attempt that day. PRACTICE YOR SWIM !!!!! 

  1. Swim underwater for a distance of 25 yards (23 meters) without surfacing.
  2. Swim 400 yards (366 meters) in less than 12 minutes.
  3. Tread water for 10 minutes, or 2 minutes without the use of hands.
  4. Transport a passive person of equal size a distance of 25 yards (23 meters) in the water.

3) Must pass a AAUS medical exam Science Diver Medical Form

Print forms and bring to the doctor's office. Perform all indicated tests for initial screening. Email medical packet and test results to Dr. Newman in a secure email ( Secure:anewman@stanford.edu ) ONLY! 

Introduction to scientific diving course is a pass/fail course. The DSO and DSO designee have the right to fail a student if they feel the diver is unsafe to themselves or others. However, the dive instructors will do everything in their power to work with you through challenges. 

5) Equipment, please make an appointment to get your gear. Required for the course is the following equipment must be purchased and available prior to joining

  • Wetsuit (minimum 7mm) and hood
  • Boots (suggested 5mm or more)
  • Gloves (suggested 3mm)
  • Mask and snorkel
  • Fins (must be heel strap)
  • Dive bag or tote (action packer recommended)

Please consult with the DSO if you have questions about the nature of gear being appropriate for the course.

You may use your own BCD, Regulator and Dry suit. These pieces of equipment MUST be inspected and have service documents and/or receipts prior to use!

6) Must have Dive Accident Insurance

The course fee is $650 to be payable to Stanford University upon registration - (after the swim test is completed)

Introduction to Science Diving dates 

  1. Fall - August 25th - September 5th 2025 (excluding weekend days)
  2. Spring - March 23rd - April 2rd 2026 (excluding weekend days)
  3. Summer - May 4th -May 15th 2026 (excluding weekend days)
