Lab Safety
Lab safety is a priority at Stanford and at Hopkins. Following are some key resources that will support labs in meeting the requirements as indicated by Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).
Please note: All labs must register their safety plan, SOPs, and inspection records with EH&S using BioRaft. BioRaft

Standard Operating Procedures
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are written instructions that describe in detail how to perform a process or experiment safely and effectively. It can cover the specific and general uses of a chemical or class of chemicals, use of equipment and machinery, and safety processes performed on campus. SOPs are a requirement of the Chemical Hygiene Plan, which also outlines PI and lab responsibilities related to SOPs.
To help you meet these requirements, EHS provides the following resources, available on the SOP Guidance page:
- SOP templates
- Guidance on prioritizing SOP development
- A list of general use SOPs for chemicals
EH&S is available for consultation on SOPs. Submit your request for EH&S review of an SOP by completing the SOP Intake Form. Please note that EH&S review supplements, but does not replace, PI/lab supervisor review and approval.
